Abstract

The results of our study suggest that the currently used correction factors, 1.25 for isolated head trauma and 1.35 for head trauma associated to polytrauma in the Harris-Benedict equation might not be appropriated for head injured patients. Further studies will have to show if it is necessary to revise these correction factors. Furthermore, it might be advisable to investigate if the above demonstrated differences between the two approaches are also detectable in healthy subjects.
