Abstract

Texas has statutory requirements for nursing peer review to assess nursing errors and near misses, hereafter referred to as practice breakdowns, at the facility level. In response to this, the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) developed the Nursing Peer Review Evaluation of Practice-breakdown (N-PREP), which supports committees in their evaluation of nursing breakdowns. This process helps determine whether a nurse's conduct is a minor incident that is remediable at the facility level or whether it is reportable to the BON. N-PREP is available to Texas healthcare organizations to promote an objective and just approach to evaluating nursing breakdowns in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
