Abstract
The s-SiAlON materials are well characterized in respect to phase equilibria (1,2) and densification behaviour (3–8). Several TEM investigations report the presence of an amorphous grain boundary phase (9–13). Other investigations report some properties of such materials (14–19). All these investigations, however, are carried out on materials of different compositions and processing conditions. It is the aim of this work to characterize a hotpressed s solid-solution (s ss) material of 11 eq.% Al3+ with varying oxygen content with regards to microstructure, high temperature strength, creep and oxidation resistance. These investigations were carried out to define a close correlation between material composition, densification behaviour and the resulting properties. In order to make these property measurements comparable to other Si3N3 type materials of different composition and processing conditions the characterization of the microcstructure is required. This paper is thought to present the latest results of our work, with a more thorough discussion left open for the future.
