Abstract

A parallel evaluation was conducted on commercial alumina (CA) and zirconia (CZ) femoral heads and NTU alumina (NA) and zirconia (NZ) materials according to related ISO standards (6474, 9325 and 7206-2). The properties including the density, 3-pt bending strength, bi-axial strength, hardness, microstructure of the materials, and surface roughness, roundness, dimension reproducibility of the heads were carefully conducted. According to the standards, the densities and microstructures of four materials are quantified. However, the results show that the testing methods of fracture strength and hardness should be modified according to the size of the head. These key points for setting requirements of ceramic material and measurement are discussed, and the appropriate testing procedures are proposed.
