Abstract

Differential spinal blockade using lignocaine is described as a technique to evaluate patients with chronic low back pain. Successive doses of 5, 25, and 50 mg. of lignocaine in isotonic saline introduced into the subarachnoid space produced results comparable to those obtained with 0.2, 0.5, and 1 per cent procaine. Of 46 patients, 27 were found to have pain of organic origin and 19 of non-organic origin. The value of differential spinal blockade is discussed.
