Abstract

As the mining industry moves towards more sustainable processing practices, the consideration of environmentally friendly reagents becomes important. Lactate esters are produced from renewable feedstock and considered green reagents because of their benign toxicological and environmental impact. Lactate esters may be considered to be suitable as flotation frothers owing to their heteropolar nature and the fact that they contain similar functional groups as commonly used industrial frothers. The most promising lactate ester, PURASOLV® BL, developed a stable froth with a lower level of entrainment than the commonly employed PPG frother, resulting in good metal recoveries and grades thereof. Utilizing lactate esters as novel green flotation frothers will attribute to the desired and mandatory shift towards greener reagents in PGM ore processing.
