Abstract

Comparison of the published generic concepts Ascodinium, Ovoidinium, and Craspedodinium led to the redefinition of Ascodinium. Ovoidinium is now considered a junior synonym with all its species transferred to the emended Ascodinium. Hypocystal features present in specimens found in northwestern Mexico and referable to A. diversum are the basis for the following paratabulation formula for the genus: 4', 3a, 7, Xc, 5', 2, Xs (ortho-hexa peridinioid). The type of archeopyle in Craspedodinium must be clarified before its taxonomic position can be established with confidence.
