Abstract

There are few more trying medical experiences than the management of the child with intractable asthma. Neither specific anti-allergic treatment nor the usual symptomatic treatment modalities suffice to avoid frequent hospitalizations. Often continuous steroids are required to maintain him as a functioning individual. Not the least of the problem is the interplay within the framework of the family group. Experience of others, dating from the published observations of Peshkin in 1930, have shown the value of a residential treatment center in the management of this type of patient. The new center in North Miami Beach represents another cog in the wheel.
