Abstract

Purpose: Initiatives to address the rise in healthcare costs and hospital overuse due to osteoarthritis are needed. In countries such as the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, general practitioners (GPs) act as gatekeeper; patients can only access hospital services by a referral from their GP. Reinforcement of this gatekeeping role of GPs may help prevent unnecessary referrals to hospitals and thereby tackle rising healthcare costs. Intermediate care projects aim at preventing unnecessary referrals to hospitals.
