Abstract

A series of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) measurements have been undertaken to test the validity of the commonly accepted expressions relating coefficients of thermal expansion of unirradiated graphite over different temperature ranges and the instantaneous coefficient of thermal expansion to the mean coefficient of thermal expansion over a specified temperature range. Results are presented for unirradiated PGA graphite and for irradiated PGA graphite. In the case of irradiated PGA graphite, expressions for evaluating instantaneous values of CTE have been tested at elevated temperatures representative of Magnox reactor operating conditions to support CTE data used to predict thermal stresses in core components.
