Abstract

AbstractAs an effective countermeasure against lightning faults on transmission lines, transmission line arresters (TLAs) have been installed. However, they have been damaged by lightning strokes with large electric charges, particularly in winter. Through the investigation of damaged TLAs, we found that some of the internal zinc oxide elements had been damaged despite the undamaged appearance of the arresters. Therefore, it is necessary to detect TLAs with damaged zinc oxide elements as soon as possible to prevent lightning faults with arrester failures. As reported in this paper, we have improved the previous method of detecting TLAs with damaged zinc oxide elements using the frequency characteristics of equivalent series resistance and evaluated the accuracy of the improved method. © 2019 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
