Abstract

IN A previous experiment (Seeger and Price, 1956), pigeon- and fowl-pox vaccines were administered to chicks at 1, 5, 10, and 15 days of age. It was found that pigeon-pox vaccine was only partially successful in developing resistance to later fowl-pox challenge, whereas fowl pox was highly successful.This is a report of further studies on vaccination of chicks, from one to 15 days of age, using fowl-pox vaccine, and challenge 40 and 80 days following vaccination.MATERIALS AND METHODSVaccines, antibiotic supplement, and chickens were described in the previous report. In this test, 19,296 chicks were housed, 268 per pen, and the final summarization of all data except challenge was made at 10 weeks of age.Procedure: For vaccination purposes, 500-dose fowl-pox vaccine was diluted in 5 cc.
