Abstract

The potential use of colostral enzymes for the determination of colostrum quality in goats was evaluated. The enzymes gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured in goat colostrum, milked within 6 h after birth. The quality of colostrum, given by the content of gammaglobulins (IgG), was assayed by electrophoresis separation of colostrum proteins. The highest activity was found for GGT, followed by LDH and ALP. A significant correlation ( r=0.7, P<0.05) between GGT and IgG concentration was showed, no correlation was found for LDH and ALP. The accuracy, speed and low cost of the dry chemistry system for GGT determination make this enzyme a potential good marker for an early colostrum quality determination in goats.
