Abstract
Eight commercial cultivars and one advanced breeding line of tall fescue (Festuca amndinacea) were screened for resistance to stem rust (Puccinia graminis subsp. graminis) in controlled conditions. Cultivar Melik and a breeding line (Melik Selection) showed high levels of resistance, while the other seven cultivars were highly susceptible. The results with cultivar Melik indicate the potential for resistance to be maintained or incorporated into future tall fescue cultivars. Within cultivars AU-Triumph, Demeter, Mozark, Pema and Southern Cross, individual plants showed moderate resistance to stem rust and this could be used as a source of resistance in a selection program.
