Abstract

Wavelength Division Multiplexing is employed in an optical communication network for upgrading the system capacity. The advent of erbium- doped fiber amplifier with WDM system is considered as one of the advanced technology in recent years. The performance of EDFA depends on several parameters such as Er+3 doping, pump power, input signal power, fiber length and different pumping schemes. In this paper, performance analysis of 16 × 10 Gbps WDM system is evaluated for gain and noise figure under co, count, and bi directional pumping schemes. Results elucidates that the maximum 44 dB gain is obtained by bidirectional pumping with −30 dBm input signal power and 500 mW pump power. Lowest 3.73 dB noise figure is achieved by co directional pumping with −30 dBm input signal power and 100 mW pump power. However, counter pumping has higher noise figure compare to co and bi-directional pumping.
