Abstract

A field trial was conducted at the Central Crops Research Station in Clayton, NC to evaluate the efficacy of foliar insecticides for control of ear feeding lepidopteran larvae. The trial was arranged in a RCB design with 10 treatments and four replicates. Plots were four rows by 9m long and were seeded on 3 Jun. Plant spacing was 97cm and 30cm between and within row respectively. All insecticides were applied with a CO2 powered backpack sprayer with a single nozzle boom equipped with a DC23 core and D3 disc delivering 15gpa at 40 psi. Sprays were directed at the silks; both sides of each row were treated. Because of high CEW oviposition pressure, treatments were initiated approximately 3 days before silk emergence and were applied every other day until harvest. Application dates for foliar sprays were: 21‡, 23, 26*, 28, 30 Jul; 1, 3†, 5† Aug.
