Abstract

The fastener flexibility is one of the most important factors affecting the fatigue life of the joints. A three-dimensional model was established by ABAQUS software to simulate the load-displacement curve of a single shear fastener under tensile load. The fastener flexibility was calculated from the simulated curve and compared with the experimental results. The effects of the element type, hole gap, clamping clearance and clamping length on the prediction accuracy and fidelity of the finite element method (FEM) model were also investigated. It was shown that the simulation results agreed well with the experimental results. The modelling method was demonstrated to be usable for subsequent structural analysis and design.
