Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the canal if it is capable to accommodate the storm water discharge during rainfall. It determined the various causes of flooding at the location. The cross sections of the canal, maximum rainfall and the rainfall intensity duration curves were the data used in analyzing the capacity of the drainage canal. The cross-sections of the canal were obtained from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), 1st District Engineering Office, Cagayan de Oro City. The rainfall data and the rainfall intensity duration curves were obtained from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), El Salvador Misamis Oriental. A survey was conducted in the location to determine the status of the canal. It was found that some sections of the canal were damaged and have imperfect riprap. The areas with those damaged and imperfect rip rapping were the cause of soil erosion. The silt deposit in the canal blocked the passage of water. Siltation resulted to shallow canal and flooding easily occurred even during light rains. Keywords - Evaluation of Drainage, Iponan Highway, Flood Mitigation.
