Abstract

Background: Although some studies have compared the usefulness of different bowel preparations (BP) given previous to a capsule endoscopy (CE) study, the real utility of these preparations is not confirmed. Aim: To evaluate the degree of intestinal cleanliness observed during CE with three different types of BP and its impact on diagnostic yield. Patients and Methods: A multicentric, prospective, randomized and controlled trial was performed. The previous day to the CE study the patients were given one of the following BP: 4 L of clear liquids (CL) (Group A; 97 patients); two doses (90 ml) of aqueous sodium phosphate (ASP) (Group B; 96 patients), or 4 L of a polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution (PEG) (Group C; 98 patients).
