Abstract

The conventional pulse oximeter is restricted as amonitoring and diagnostic tool for patient care, which is influenced by motion artifacts. This paper focuses on the development of a low cost portable generalized pulse oximeter with reduced circuitry. The purpose of this study is to compare the conventional microcontroller based and non-conventional PC/Laptop based non-invasive pulse oximeter. The real-time analysis of pulse rate and oxygen saturation has opened the door for next generation clinicians and researchers. The advanced bio-signal processing technique and calibration curve fitting technique for bio-signal processing using MatLab as a tool has revolutionized the research. Non-Invasive pulse oximetery has been a vital monitoring modality in critical care unit of hospitals but PC interface has proved to be a watershed, as pulse rate and oxygen saturation readings is now being utilized in sports, household applications and research.KeywordsPulse oximeterBio-signal processingNon-ConventionalCurve fittingCritical care unit
