Abstract

The fluorescence characteristics of coal and its macerals have always been an important subject. Due to the correlation between the fluorescence and coking properties of coal macerals and other technological properties of coal, the fluorescence of coal macerals has attracted more and more interest. In order to better apply the fluorescence properties of coal to the production of coal chemical industry, the relative fluorescence intensity of multiple macerals (RFMI) obtained by a modified fluorescence alteration of multiple macerals (FAMM) technique was used in evaluation of coking coal in this paper. In the modified FAMM technique, full frame transfer charge coupled device (FFT-CCD) array detector and the excitation wavelength of 360 nm were used. Six kinds of coking coal were tested by the modified FAMM technique. The results indicated that the RFMI has a linear correlation with vitrinite reflectance. RFMI change is more sensitive to the caking properties than vitrinite reflectance and can well represent the caking index of coal samples, which will be a powerful supplement to the existing coal evaluation standards.
