Abstract

In the framework of a study on the environmental contamination status of lake Vegoritis, chemical parameters concerning the water quality of the lake were evaluated. Physicochemical parameters, nutrients, major ionic components (NO3 ‐, NH4 +, Norg, PO4 3‐, Cl‐, SO4 2‐), organic carbon, as well as the heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mn and Fe were determined in the dissolved fraction during a one year survey at 15 different sampling stations. The major result of this study was that high concentrations of nitrogen compounds were observed in the surface waters mainly introduced along the Solou stream, which accepts industrial and municipal waste of the surrounding area. The heavy metal concentrations were in general low and no significant variations were observed from the examined stations on Vegoritis lake.
