Abstract

In 19 field tests of bromegrass, Bromus inermis Leyss., progeny were established in five different years and three traits were evaluated. Evaluation of spring vigor, fall growth and hay yield to characterize progeny performance was most effective in the second year. The two-year data gave positive correlations with three-year data exceeding 0.80 for spring vigor, yield, and, in 15 of 19 tests, fall growth. There was only a slight increase in effective evaluation when third-year data were obtained. Age of stand was more important than seasonal conditions in evaluating these traits from bromegrass progeny tests.
