Abstract

ABSTRACT THE ideal bite (or nipple) drinker for fattening pigs should be made of a strong, non-corrosive material, have a technically uncomplicated construction, and a simple mode of fixation to the incoming water pipe. The strainer should have a large mesh, be easy to detach, and exposed to flowing water in the support pipe. Fixation of the O-packing to the valve body instead of the valve spindle and having an adequate inside width will contribute to safety and long life of the valve. Apparently locating the bite valve behind the partition between the dunging area and the sleeping area resulted in a lower amount of water being wasted and an improved hygiene in the pens. In pens containing 10 pigs, two bite valves (one per 5 pigs) are recommended to reduce water consumption due to wastage.
