Abstract

The ballasted track is a track system that is used worldwide due to its flexibility and low construction cost. Deformation due to train loading is inevitable, and this demands maintenance works such as tamping and ballast replacement. The aggregates’ abrasion is known as one of the major factors influencing ballasted-track deterioration. For the quantification of the aggregates’ shape, image processing is an effective tool. This paper suggests a model for the determination of the L.A. abrasion loss of ballast materials using shape indices evaluated through an image processing technique with Los Angeles (L.A.) abrasion tests. The assessment of the L.A. abrasion losses of the ballast aggregates in Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway shows that the need for maintenance works (cumulative tamping length) increases exponentially as the ballast aggregates become abraded.
