Abstract

Unlike human teeth, the incisors of rodents have the unique feature of continuous growth throughout the lifetime of the animal. As the tooth lengthens, angiogenesis in the tooth pulp correspondingly must progress throughout the entire length of the tooth pulp. This dynamic tissue can be used as a valuable tool for studying the effects of drugs on angiogenesis in adult animals. The goal of this study was to develop a reliable and reproducible method for evaluating the pharmacodynamic effects of a small molecule VEGFR-2 inhibitor on blood vessel density in adult rats using formalin fixed, paraffin embedded, decalcified rat incisors.
