Abstract

Abstract An azocalix[4]arene, bearing ester groups on the lower rim (ligand 1), has been evaluated for the selective extraction of Pd(II) ions over some other noble metals in hydrochloric medium. The stripping behaviour was studied using some common stripping solutions. The use of 0.5 M thiourea in 1 M HCl led to a complete Pd(II) releasing. A kinetic study of the extraction of Pd(II) with ligand 1 has been also made, demonstrating an optimal equilibrium time of 24 hours. The effect of the chloride concentration in the aqueous phase on the extraction efficiency was studied. A higher chloride concentration (c.a. ≥ 0.65 M) inhibits the extraction process. The Pd(II)-ligand 1 complex stoechiometry was determined by the molar ratio method. This method shows a 2:1 Pd(II)-ligand 1 complex confirming the liquid-liquid extraction data.
