Abstract
The adsorption properties of the standard commercial ETEK Pt (20 wt %)/Vulcan XC72 catalyst have been evaluated using H2 and CO as probe molecules. The influence of the surface chemistry of the carbon black support has been observed to play a crucial role on the catalyst behavior. The analysis of the impact of the pretreatment conditions on the determination of the metal surface area calculated on the basis of the specific adsorption of the probe molecules on the surface Pt is thoroughly discussed in order to provide a series of criteria for the catalyst active area measurement in proton exchange membrane fuel cell electrodes.
