Abstract

AbstractThe goal of the present investigation was to develop a simple, flexible inventory to query subjects on the support characteristics of cognitive strategies that they listed in unstructured verbal reports. The utility of the method was determined by its use in research on script memory and in applied research on the learning strategies of college students. Script memory was found to be associated with emotion and imagery. Also, it was shown that the inventory could discriminate good and poor learners on the basis of their cognitive strategies. Despite the utility of this inventory in the measurement of the support characteristics of cognitive strategies, it clearly needs improvement. One of the most important drawbacks was that the ability of the inventory to discriminate good and poor learners was weakened by a lack of detail in the students' lists of their learning strategies.
