Abstract

Current trends in the quantitative analysis of echinacoside and cichoric acid, active components of medicinal herbs, are well documented and included in many official monographs. These procedures tend to favor HPLC or spectrophotometric methods. The ubiquitous nature of echinacea preparations, their use, and media coverage initiated our interest in optimizing a quantitative procedure for analysis of the compounds and concurrent comparison with methods cited in the literature. Our recent work on the quantitative analysis of echinacoside and cichoric acid in commercially available echinacea preparations has resulted in reliable, accurate, and simultaneous quantitative separation of these compounds in most of these samples. This paper describes the details of our analytical HPTLC method.
