Abstract

The authors note a considerable discrepancy in the frequency of adverse reactions reported after bronchography with Hytrast as used in America to the excellent tolerance reported in Europe and South Africa. The Hytrast used in America has a different formulation to that used in Europe: it is much less viscous and causes more ‘alveolarisation’. Experimental bronchography in dogs did not however reveal any difference in inflammatory response whether the contrast medium was Hytrast (French), Hytrast (as used in America) and Dionosil oily. The different methods of handling of contrast medium in the lung are discussed. The authors recommend that Hytrast (French) should not be modified before bronchography.
