Abstract

"Medicine lists " in the Aberdeen General Hospitals have been dispensed with, and a single prescription sheet is used for the administration of drugs. This system has been evaluated over an 18-month period. Instructions could be accommodated on a single sheet for 95% of patients. A satisfactory response was obtained to recommendations on printing drug names, use of the metric system, and signing of prescriptions by a doctor. Introduction of the system resulted in a 50% saving in time spent on this aspect of drug administration. The next step was to devise a system of recording drugs administered. This was achieved for " regular " drugs by designing a separate recording sheet. A preliminary trial indicated a true error-rate of about 2% could be attained. Use of the recording sheet reduced the saving in nursing-time to 40%, on average. With the introduction of these two sheets, the way is now clear for more detailed studies of drug administration.
