Abstract

A metallurgical evaluation was performed to investigate a crack in a lateral water wall boiler tube. The 2.5-in. diameter, carbon-steel tube was removed from a 125 MW coal-fired boiler used for base load electric power generation. Visual examination, microstructure characterization, and SEM/EDS analysis were used to determine that hydrogen damage was the primary failure mechanism.
