Abstract

Following the successful operation of tidal range power plants, such as 240 MW Rance Tidal Power Station in France and the 254 MW Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station in South Korea, it has proven its technical viability and can be considered a mature technology. However, the assessment technique for tidal energy resources is not perfect. This paper summarizes the main problems of current tidal energy resource assessment, gives a brief introduction to the tidal potential energy theory and total tidal resources estimation method based on tidal numerical simulation technology, and concludes technical characteristics and applicability of these two methods. Then, based on the forms of tidal range power, with the combination of flux conservation theory, a new evaluation method for tidal range energy with rich evaluation parameters and easy to operate is developed, and is applied to Zhejiang Jiantiao Harbor, China for demonstration.
