Abstract

Hypersexual disorder is defined as recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, sexual urges, and sexual behaviors associated with significant distress or impairment of functioning. The category was proposed but not ultimately included in the DSM-5. A biopsychosocial approach needs to be applied in the evaluation and treatment of this disorder in order to reduce/eliminate the effects of biological and psychosocial factors that might have predisposed, precipitated, or perpetuated the symptoms. Effective treatments include antidepressants, antiandrogens and other hormonal treatments, individual psychotherapy, 12-step programs, and couple therapy. The prognosis of hypersexual disorder is guarded and is highly dependent on adherence to treatment interventions. Other (specified and unspecified) sexual dysfunctions include disorders that did not meet the DSM-5 criteria.
