Abstract

Anterolateral impingement (ALI) of the ankle is an increasingly recognized complication after recurrent lateral ankle sprains and is hypothesized to occur because of persistent ankle instability. Conservative management is typically the first-line treatment choice; however, to our knowledge there are no published studies or case reviews that describe or evaluate a conservative treatment plan, and no randomized controlled studies have been conducted to compare conservative and surgical treatment. This report highlights a unique case of ALI syndrome in an athlete who had undergone a prior lateral ankle reconstruction because of recurrent ankle sprains. It also details a successful conservative treatment paradigm.
