Abstract

Sleep disorders are prevalent among older adults, however, many sleep issues in late life are minimized, underdiagnosed, and poorly managed. Recognizing and treating sleep disturbances among older adults is important in alleviating the burden of disease, minimizing caregiver burnout, reducing the rate of institutionalization, and confronting disparities in sleep health. This symposium highlights the assessment, and management of common sleep complaints in late life with the aim of improving the quality of sleep among older adults. This symposium will also address the common changes in the sleep architecture of older adults, and the medications available for the treatment of insomnia, including over-the-counter formulations and herbal remedies. In addition, this symposium will address non-pharmacological interventions, including the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) and a brief introduction to consumer sleep technologies (CSTs).
