Abstract

Objectives
Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia (PVL) is an aggressive subtype of oral leukoplakia, has a high risk of recurrence and malignant transformation, there are no effective treatments, and the diagnosis is a challenge. Several authors seek to systematize criteria to facilitate this diagnosis. The aim was to evaluate the applicability of the two LVP classification systems, compare the agreement and systematize the monitoring of patients.
Study Design
Retro-prospective, cross-sectional, analytical and comparative study with patients between 2018 and 2019, with white plaque lesions (leukoplakia, keratoses and dysplasia) diagnosed clinically, microscopically and with photographic record of follow-up for at least 6 months. The PVL classification criteria of Cerero et al. (2010) and Villa et al. (2018) were applied.
Results
Of the 32 patients selected, it was feasible to classify 24 patients (15/2018 and 09/2019). The average rate of agreement between the classifications was 76.67%: 31.11% yes-PVL, 45.55% non-PVL and 23.33% disagreement. According to the classification criteria of Cerero et al. and Villa et al. respectively, the average rate between the years was 54.44% to 31.11% yes-PVL and 45.55% to 68.89% non-PVL.
Conclusions
Cerero et al. criteria diagnosed a larger number of patients, however used together, improve the diagnosis of PVL and systematize patient follow-up.
