Abstract

Large diameter transmission mains are a critical element of water distribution systems, since a failure can be catastrophic and result in extended service interruptions for many customers, along with associated water quality concerns. Recent advancements in polymer science has resulted in the production of high-performance large diameter (16-inch and larger) high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes capable of withstanding high pressures. However, the use of HDPE pipe for large diameter pressure applications has been limited due to lack of adequate experience and perception issues associated with HDPE for pressure pipe applications. As such, this paper provides a review with respect to the experience to date with large diameter HDPE for water transmission mains via case studies from water utilities in the USA and around the globe. The case studies presented herein are being compiled as a part of an ongoing wider scale research project on durability and reliability of large diameter HDPE pipe (Water Research Foundation #4485). At the time of this manuscript submission, case studies have been collected by the project team with HDPE pipes range from 20 to 42 inches in diameter and span a variety of soils, landscapes, and surface conditions. While a full evaluation of a particular pipe material requires several other aspects to consider, the goal of this paper is to present an independent, overall review of large diameter HDPE pipe for water transmission applications.
