Abstract
Metal matrix composites are being increasingly identified in now a days as new wear resistant material. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the wear and hardness of the composite material Al-6061 alloy strengthened with Al2O3 and ZrO2 particulate and constructed with the help of stir casting method. The wear rate and frictional properties of the composite were conducted in pin and disk type of wear testing machine. The investigation was carried out with constant length of sliding distance and sliding velocity over different load ranges for aluminium metal matrix composite. The testing result indicated that the wear resistance increases when there is increase in the load. Additionally, an effort was made by keeping Al2O3 as constant of 2.5% along with increase in 1, 2, 3 and 4% of ZrO2. It was observed that, the strengthened aluminium metal matrix in addition of Al2O3 and ZrO2 decreases the range of damage due to friction.
