Abstract

This chapter presents an idea of including the energy cost in the total cost of manufacturing. The main objective of this work is to index and evaluate the process plan based on the energy consumption of different machining processes while considering machining cost to index the process plans based on energy consumption and to select the best process plan based on machining cost. The second portion is the energy evaluation part, in which the process planner, after selecting machining parameters and considering several alternative process plans, analyzes and compares the energy cost and the total machining cost for the part. MPSEL program was used to develop alternative process plans. VISUALMACH program was used to calculate process plan attributes. Different process plans were compared based on the costs of energy, machining, material, and total cost. The obtained results from the proposed methodology showed a significant contribution toward the effectiveness of energy management function within enterprises to meet targets and goals on energy and emissions reduction.
