Abstract

ABSTRACT The Education of the developmentally Young (EDY) course is a widely disseminated in‐service training course for staff working with persons with severe learning difficulties in the use of behavioural techniques. An evaluation of the views of trainees who have received a certificate for successful completion of the EDY course is complemented with a survey of the views of EDY instructors. The course is highly valued by those involved who consider that it is successful in developing the skills concerned and leads to beneficial effects in their schools and units. This impression is supported by a series of case studies of EDY in use in schools. Notwithstanding this it appears that in its present form EDY suffers from a number of deficiencies, which are analysed. Given attention to these matters in a revised version of the materials, and a flexible use of such materials, it is suggested that there is a strong case for the continued use of this package in the next decade
