Abstract

Software Defined Networks (SDN) means programmable networks i.e. network elements that can be configured programmatic interface without the need to specify the rules in the firmware. SDN facilitates to decouple content and services from the traffic, and decouple virtual networks from the physical transport. For the scalability of SDN the overload on the data plane and control plane can be reduced by using CPU, RAM and File I/O functionalities. The generic ×86 CPU can be used for generic applications of forwarding packets in SDN. RAM can be used to handle the chained flow tables because in programmable networking environment the packet handling is done based on the current scenario of the traffic and not based on predefined rules. This paper presents the evaluation of the system performance using the benchmark ‘sysbench’. The results showed that the generic applications in SDN when talking in terms of GB's of data can be handled by the generic ×86 CPU. The results of the evaluation can then be used to make the policies by which the scalability challenge in SDN will be handled.
