Abstract

National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rate is an important program outcome for prelicensure schools of nursing. A Critical Thinking Course, developed and offered to students who were identified as being at risk for nursing program and NCLEX success was evaluated to determine if the intended outcomes; improved NCLEX readiness and NCLEX success, were being met. Anecdotal data revealed students believed that they benefited from the course. However, results of data analysis in this descriptive convenience sample suggest the course did not improve students’ standardized tests performance or NCLEX success. The results informed faculty to identify aspects of the course and program that most effectively support student success. The study findings highlight the importance of evaluation for program review and improvement.
