Abstract

1. An approach was proposed which explains the difference between the theoretical and effective stress concentration factors and presumes the appearance of cracks in the material on the most heavily stressed section of the stress concentrator. 2. It was established that in the case of cyclic tension-compression of specimens of the same material having the same minimum cross sections and different theoretical stress concentration factors, the time to the nucleation of a main crack is determined by the single relation δn−N. 3. Theoretical formulas were obtained for constructing the fatigue curves of specimens with stress concentrators. 4. The validity of the assumptions made in developing the above approach is demonstrated by the satisfactory description of experimental data from the literature by the relations that were obtained.
