Abstract

Abstract The aim of this research is to study characteristics of material from Barak and Al-Amerat landfill and to investigate the impacts of landfill on the environment. The multiple academic resources have been used to gather the data such as books, landfill reports, journals, literature review, and interviews with specialists. The main components of the total generated wastes were the plastic materials with about half a million per year followed by the paper materials with 330,000 tons per year. These materials are a promising source for some industries, especially plastic materials. By increasing the portion of non-biodegradable waste of total municipal solid wastes (MSWs) over the last 3 years, incineration of non-recyclable MSWs consider as an alternative solution. The groundwater under these landfills was strongly polluted by leachate originated from the landfill. CH4 emissions from solid waste in Oman increases enormously with time, and capture of this gas for energy production could provide a sustainable waste management solution in Oman.
