Abstract

Learning materials play an important role in teaching English as an international language (TEIL) in Indonesian contexts. They serve as a trigger and activities to develop learners’ competencies as stated in a curriculum. However, those used in classrooms are not always empirically suitable for learners’ characteristics and are not really relevant to the current demands, competencies needed in the Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0, skills in the 21st century, and society 5.0. To meet the demands, the existing materials should be empirically investigated, revised, redeveloped, and used to strengthen learners’ competencies demanded in the current and future era. This article discusses the needs and framework to conduct English learning materials (ELM) evaluation. The discussion embraces criteria of good ELM, the needs to evaluate the existing ELM, types of ELM evaluation, criteria for ELM evaluation, ways to conduct ELM evaluation, and the benefits of conducting ELM evaluation.
