Abstract

This chapter examines policies that protect the environment and encourage sustainable business practice, and have helped with growth and profitability in one of the United Kingdom's top supermarkets, Waitrose—a company that is part of the John Lewis Partnership. The concepts of leadership and sustainability are intertwined with corporate social responsibility (CSR) because businesses are nowadays expected to have a sustainability policy, and business leaders clearly have an impact on setting the organizational goals. The analysis of corporate websites is a common method when evaluating policies that constitute parts of CSR because it can show corporate vision, business philosophy, and CSR policies, including environmental and sustainability policies. The chapter focuses on several themes such as, business philosophy, employee's rights, sustainability and leadership, and environmental protection. John Lewis's leadership model is centred on shared business responsibility, and participation of all partners in setting organizational goals has contributed towards sustainable growth and policies of environmental protection.
