Abstract

The specific technical problems raised by spillways founded on earthfill are coming from foundation (low shear strength, strain, seepage), and downstream stilling basin. The typical spillways experienced are armoured rockfill slopes, concrete spillway chute and armoured earthfill. Each type is illustrated, in the discharges possible range, by significant works. A new type can be imagined with a graded chute partially dissipating hydraulic energy and possibly limiting downstream stilling basin requirements. This new type should probably be usable in the same range of discharges as the above experienced types.
