Abstract
BECAUSE of the significance of the eustachian tube in modern middle ear surgery, a special clinic concerned with evaluation of the function of the eustachian tube was established some time ago at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. This clinic was concerned with research into basic physiological functions of the tube and their alteration by disease processes with the aim of applying the findings clinically, especially to perfect methods of middle ear reconstructive surgery. Our long range program is as follows: First, to establish a clinically applicable, qualitative, and quantitative testing method for testing the physiological functions of the eustachian tube.1-4Second, to evaluate accuracy and clinical applicability of classifications of different tubal functions previously described.5Third, to identify the pathologic changes which lead to impaired tubal function.
